    I got one of these with all the accessories when I was 12. I couldn't get anything to load from the cassette player, and a month later, it died and wouldn't even turn on. Went to take it back and get another one, and they were already off the shelves. Oh well.

    One more thing considering the repair of this type of ALPS drive. If you replaced the caps and the drive still does not boot. Do proper preparation to diagnose the floppy further on a working PC with 34 pin FDD connector on the motherboard. To use this drive ona PC MB you have to create a test cable for that. -Use a standard 34 pin FDD cable for a PC as a starting point. Cut the floppy drive connector down from the cable. Tear down 6 wire together from an another floppy or HDD cable. -Remove one edge connector from the IBM floppy cable (in my system the cable has two 40 pin edge connectors and I use only one). First remove the top closing plastic part of the connector. Be careful not to break the guide plastic parts at the ends. Tear the cable from the connector gently, not damaging the cable. -Put the 34 wire cable and the 6 wire cable next to each other and match the 40 pole edge connector top with the two strips of cable. Press the top part of the 40 pin edge connector into the connector body using a vice. Please make sure the wires are well aligned and not moved before the press. Check the connectivity between the 40 pin edge connector and the other ends of the cables. - Solder a molex connector to the 6 wire strip: solder the pin 40 wire to the 12V line - yellow or orange-. Solder the pin 38 wire to the +5V molex line - red -. The other 4 lines are not used but it is necessary to do the easy alignement of the two cable strips to the edge connector. The cable is ready for use. - Search and download the imd software package. Use imd.com for testing the drive on PC. Learn the usage of the program. When you familiar with the base functionalities of the program start test the ALPS drive with a know good formatted floppy disc. - First check the rotational speed. It should be around 300 RPM. If the program is not able to measure it then check the 40 pin edge connector's pin 8 for index pulses using an oscilloscope. -Run the Analysis function. It will constantly rotate the disc and read the heads. It will help to understand what happening with the heads. If you have not got any readings from the heads than a head check and head assembly alignement is necessary. Be aware: if you decide to remove the head assembly apply utmost care in the disassembly because the two ribbon cables of the heads are very very delicate. They will tear easily if you strech them a bit. (Do not ask how I know :-((( ). Make a bunch of photos about the assembly before touching any screws. -Do not touch the screws of the head assembly. If you completely disassembly the upper head than you have to align four screws after assembling which is a nightmare. Do not do that. -To remove the top head remove the screws of the rail guards only. Gently remove the flex cable connectors from the sockets. Remember the positions of the cables, easy to mix them. -Examine the heads for breaks, corrosions, mechanical damages on the flex cables, etc. Measure the resistances on the flex cable connectors. -If all seems to be ok than you need a head assembly realignement. Assemble the head assembly into its place. The head assembly should be tight, no wiggle at all. Try to move the assembly by rotating the stepper motor shaft by finger. It should move with small resistance. -Move the head to track 0 in the idm - Analisys function group. Start the analysis function. Check the head 0 readings. If it is not reading anything at all than you have to modify the track 0 position sensor. Unscrew the two screws a bit of the sensor until you can move the sensor in and out by hand but the sensor can not be loose. - Move the sensor a bit outwards - inwards and do a reseek to track 0. Repeat these steps until you find the track 0 on the lower head. Than you can proceed to adjust the upper head. If you move the sensor inward too much than the reading will be show track 2. -Move the head to track 0. Loosen the two outer screws of the head assembly and try to move the head in and out in order to find the track 0. Do not push the head down, you will damage the disk. Change the head reading to see wether you have still reading on the bottom head. If you are lucky than you will find track 0 on both of the heads. It needs a lot of patience to complete the process. We are talking about 0.1-0.3mm adjustments. - move the head to the track 40, track 80 and check the readings on both heads. Theoretically the bottom head should be fine, it can not be misaligned if the two rods are in place and tightened down properly. If you have bad readings on these tracks on the upper head than you should twist the upper head a bit and check the readings on 0, 40, 79 tracks again and again. It takes a lot of time and patience. - As far as I see this drive using stepper motors in fixed screw position therefore it is not possible to adjust the heads with twisting the motor a bit, like at the case of the amiga floppy drives. - Good luck!

    Regarding the removal of the caps: be very carefull not to tear up the pads, especially the ground pads of the caps. I did just a little tear on two caps' GND pads. If the middle cap's ground is broken than the spindle controller IC ground will be broken as well (up and down middle section of the IC with a shorted pins). Due to this reason the spindle motor will not rotate. If you broke the right side cap's ground (below the 74HC14 IC) than the 74HC14 ground is broken as well, resulting no index pulse on the drive. After the replacement always check the grond of the two ICs.

    I owned this computer - my father owned a chain of retail computer stores in the 1980's in the Boston area. His company was the sole US distributor for Hyperion PC's and he sold quite a few to the academic/university community in the Boston and Cambridge area. I was given one of the dealer samples and I used this computer from 1983 - 1987. It had a reliable 300 bps modem. While there were many compatibility issues with mainstream PC software of the time (Lotus 1-2-3,, etc) it did run Wordstar quite well. It also ran Borland Turbo Pascal - and it was quite impressive. My college computer science professors were impressed. Borland Sidekick productivity utilities also ran well on it. I was able to run a serial connection to the campus network and connect to Unix based servers via command line. The sample I had was robust and paired with my Okidata dot matrix printer, I was the envy of my peers in my undergraduate studies.

    I'm currently doing this right now, I got four screens from someone on vcfd forums, two Toshiba and two compaq. Any tips? I'm currently struggling with mine, it seems that every time I solder a new one on it creates lines that weren't there before

    • @drueking
      @drueking Месяц назад

      It's not easy. You may be fixing some that now show, pre-existing but hidden, problems from another chip. You have to be very careful where the flexible trace sheet is attached near the glass also. It can go bad there too and so far I haven't found a good way to correct that. I ended up having a couple of lines bad at that point and temporarily fixed it by putting in a small piece of something to add just a bit of pressure on the trace near the glass screen. I WOULDN'T RECOMMEND IT. It may be fixable if I added some heat while I pressed the trace at its entry to the screen but I don't have the guts to try it.

      I think RUclips keeps deleting my comments, but I ended up finding a lot of suppliers. The only problem is that the chips are bare minimum $5.00 a piece. The SN751518 I managed to get a quote for $1.65, but every other chip is upwards of $5.00. I'll post a comprehensive list of findings on the vintage computer federation forum when I'm done repairing these screens, RUclips keeps deleting my comments for posting links. A few things to note: horizontal chips almost never go bad, I only have two screens that have dead horizontal lines, and it's only one chip on those. The plastic frame ones usually have more dead chips compared to an aluminum frame screen. Aluminum frame screens are more likely to have severed ribbon cables because the aluminum warps and presses against the ribbon cable cutting it. The white packages can cause an entire section to go bad if one goes bad. I also don't know if any way to replace those white packages under the chips. The main thing I have learned from this repair is that if you bang your head against a brick wall enough times, it will eventually break.

    I checked the specifications of MSM58321 It should operate down to 2.2 V. As an aside, I don’t understand why you put another nickel cadmium battery into your Hyperion. Nicad batteries are notorious for leaking corrosive electrolyte and doing serious damage to motherboards. A better solution would be to put in a 3v lithium CR2032 within a disc battery holder In the place of the nickel cadmium battery. To prevent the power supply from attempting to charge the CR2032, It would be necessary to cut the jumper at E1 and E2. With that jumper, cut the MSM58321 will run right off the battery and the battery will not charge when the computer is on. If you were to forget about the CR2032 and it leaked, its guts would be contained within the disc battery holder. But that is unlikely to happen; CR2032s are very stable and contain very little electrolyte.

    • @Mr.BrownsBasement

      I prefer to do so as well. But after dealing with the horrific damage done to PCB’s by NiCad (and lithium) electrolyte leakage I won’t put back original style batteries anymore. They can leak without warning and completely eliminate a large swath of traces much larger than the battery itself. Each to their own…

    I helped Paolo on the TI99-PC project by testing it on various disk drives and controller cards and reporting any problems I found. I also edited the documentation to make it easier to understand. He lived in Italy so English was not his primary language. The program was designed to use a combination of QBASIC and 80286 assembly language. Because it uses direct control of the floppy disk controller, it was intended to run in MS-DOS. Maybe the later versions were modified for Windows compatibility. I used the p-System a little. I don't think the errors about unit 4, 5, and 9 are normal. I think it means that it is reading your disk in drive 1 when it tries to read drive 1, 2 or 3 (unit 4, 5, and 9 on the p-System). Something is not configured correctly. You might need to install termination resistors on the drive. It might also have the drive select switches or jumpers set wrong. I discovered that it is possible to use the p-System with an 80 column screen. I connected a video terminal (probably a VT52) to the RS232 interface and set it up for 9600 baud. You can use a computer running a terminal emulator like Procomm instead. You would need to modify SYSTEM.MISCINFO with SETUP, write a small GOTOXY procedure in Pascal to control cursor positioning, bind it to the operating system (I think that involved a LIBRARY program), and redirect the input and output. I made a disk that would boot the system to operate with the terminal automatically. I don't know if I still have it. I remember that the screen writing was slow. I think it was about 240 characters per second, about the same as using a 2400 baud modem.

    My mom bought one of these thinking it was a gaming system. Pretty sure after they were already rendered obsolete and discounted. She didn't realize she was introducing a brilliant little black kid in NYC a gift of an early computer which started my love for them (rare in our area. At the time apples were in my grade school for typing and in 7th or 8th grade a computer in our intermediate school that had.... A 1x CD Rom reader. If not for that introduction to computers and growing up asking side of them I wouldn't have been able to become an IT person as a young adult ( then later a scientist and educator). I remember the tron game and the dungeon and dragon game (both fun for young me). Oh and I think i remember overlays that went over the keyboard. I never had a tape drive or any tapes.
